For it’s first four years Black Fret ran as an all volunteer organization. The vast majority of our contributors remain and will always remain volunteers. We are a group of people who are extremely passionate about our city and our local music. And everyone here knows the sacrifices it takes to commit time, energy and intensity to our cause. It’s that passion that has driven our continuous growth and success. And we are proud of what we have accomplished together. If you are one of Austin’s passionate music fans, have a give muscle that needs exercising, or just want to be a part of one of the world’s best teams dedicated to supporting local music, fill out the form below and let us know about you. We will send you everything you need to know to get plugged in.
We are always looking for driven interns and for dynamic volunteers to (1) help with our performances and (2) our operations. As a volunteer run organization it is imperative that you are a self-starter and can self-manage to deliverables. We do NOT have the bandwidth to be chasing folks to be on time and to get work completed to meet deadlines. As a result we run on a three strikes and you’re out philosophy. Company meetings tend to occur in the evenings and on weekends to accommodate most folks working schedules. You’ll find we have great compassion, understanding and support for one another as long as you complete your work and communicate when you hit a challenge.
We hold ourselves to exceptionally high standards for professionally run performances, delivering exceptional sound, a premium and stylized guest experience, and held in a wide variety of challenging locations. You’ll need to be on time, presentable, complete assigned work with intelligence, integrity, self-direction, and an awareness of risks to your own safety and that of others. You must be willing to lend a hand when asked and self-motivated to ensure the event runs smoothly, that things stay clean and safe. And while events almost always including alcoholic beverages for guests we have strict rules governing volunteer consumption during the event. In recognition of all of this, we reward our volunteers with plenty of really special opportunities to wind down together and take stock of all that we have accomplished.
Important: The vast majority of our performances occur every other Saturday night. Volunteers need to be available between the hours of 2pm and midnight. On the day of the event you can expect long hours, some outside in the heat, and with some jobs including heavy lifting. Performance Volunteers should be prepared to commit to working no less than five events over a one year period. Interns should be prepared to commit to working no less than five events during a full semester. All roles require you to be in good health, physically fit, able to provide your own transportation to and from events scattered around the city and that you have a mobile phone we can reach you in the event of any last minute changes. Select roles may require a driver’s license, a vehicle in good working condition and auto insurance. We do NOT provide workers compensation, auto, health, disability, injury, life or other insurance or benefits to our volunteers and interns.

One of the beautiful things about Black Fret are the near limitless opportunities to serve our community and our musicians. Many of our operations roles relate to the creation of new content, the promotion of our organization and our musicians, fundraising and helping Black Fret Artists serve the broader community. Being an Operations Volunteer will largely mean that you perform your job at your own schedule and location but will be held accountable to consistent, high quality and timely completion of your specific assigned tasks. Many Operations roles have strict deadlines as much of what we do revolves around the event schedule. Team meetings will generally occur once or twice a month on weeknights in the evenings or weekend days. Some community service events may occur during normal business hours, evenings or on the weekends.
Important: Operations Volunteers should be willing to commit to a full year in their role. Interns should be prepared to commit to working no less than five hours a week for at least two full semesters. You will need to provide your own phone, computer and internet access for most functions. We do NOT provide workers compensation, auto, health, disability, injury, life or other insurance or benefits to our volunteers and interns.
